Bucharest Potrait of an Artist

QUOTE

In a way, Bucharest is mine too. It is that Bucharest of queues for ‘chicken carcasses’ (we used to call it the Petreuș Brothers), overcrowded buses carrying useless methane tubes on their hoods, ice-cream stands with a rock set in front of the counter so that we kids would be able to reach the level of the salesman inside, people in hole-ridden shirts eternally repairing broken-down Dacias and Rapid football matches (a sort of Dâmbovița-style Liverpool team) and the Herastrau wheel, where we would go on summer Sundays after crossing the lake by boat. Interestingly, I wanted to shoot the photo feature “At the Wheel” in northern Herăstrău… After a few weeks it was already gone; it did not fit the “EU requirements”. Part of what had been “my Bucharest” is already gone, along with the maidan next to the trolleybus depot, where we would take turns being Hugo Sanchez, Hagi or Mărgelatu’ (the guy with the beads). (It is now a “commercial area” with third-rate restaurants.)

I was asked many times why I didn’t leave Romania, as with my job it should have been easy… Where should I have gone? Sometimes, the answer seems to be ‘anywhere’. But I get over the thought soon enough: in the end, Bucharest is also my town, in a way…

CITAT
