Bucharest Potrait of an Artist

QUOTE

For a long while, Bucharest was to me the Amzei market, and its surroundings. We had a studio at the Brătianu establishment, with the windows facing the Amzei Church and attached to the angels’ house of Mița Biciclista. Professor Virgil Lefter, one of my collectors, told me that sometime in the 60s Mița B. would send her man to beg at the corner of Mendeleev Street and with the money they made they would go every Saturday, elegantly dressed, to dine at Athénée Palace.

For thirty years, my daily outings were almost identical: Amzei Market, through the vegetable, fruit and flower stalls of peasants from Teleorman, then the National Arts University on the street with chestnut trees, the Humanitas Publishing House back yard bookshop, and then, later in the evening, in the garden of the Writers’ Union
restaurant on Calea Victorieri, sipping wine with {tefan Agopian, Mircea Spătaru, Mirel Zamfirescu, at the owner’s table, the poet Eugen Suciu.

Again, Amzei Market, one evening on my way home, I bought from an old man a fig tree sprig in half a plastic bottle. Now, in the interior yard of our house, on summer days, I rest in its shadow, among my son, Adrian Ilfoveanu’s, sculptures, sipping Turkish style coffee, made using the recipe of an Armenian in our neighborhood. And now, when I have moved my studio close to home, I carry with me the nostalgia of those places; but maybe it is not about the ‘there’ but more about the ‘then’.

CITAT
