Bucharest Potrait of an Artist

QUOTE

Bucharest, you are my brother!

There are many cities in the world where, after repeated returns, I feel “at home.” I know their streets, parks, museums, theaters… and supermarkets.

But what does home really mean? If I were to look for one single word that encompasses everything I would say… Bucharest. With the tram squeaking a few steps away from the window of my childhood room, with the trolleybuses passing in front of the high school, which, as my friend would say, would always have their “clips” jump off the cables, with the overwhelming heat and the asphalt where shoe heels would sink during summer, with the Bordei lake, which we would swim across in summer after I had passed the first exams at the music high school…with the smell of linden tree and the mulberry spots on the sidewalks… with the Matache Market.

It grew, it changed, modern glass buildings emerged, my childhood neighborhood is now filled with towering and monotonous office buildings and instead of the squeaky tram now there is a four-lane street. And still, when I come from the airport, beneath the trees on Kisseleff Boulevard, I feel how something inside of me settles in: I have arrived. Home.

CITAT
