Bucharest Potrait of an Artist

QUOTE

…1969, fall. I was a student; the place was full, crowded: at the entrance to Palatul Telefoanelor, at the corner where it meets Calea Victoriei, the heavy, revolving door was letting me in to postal stamps, envelopes, letters, money, magazines. Another time, I had just finished some exams, and was passing through the Victoria Passage, climbing down the stairs on Matei Millo Street; at the corner behind the palace were the phones, the public phone switchboard: booths, phone operators wearing headphones and microphones continuously plugging and unplugging wires into a panel perforated like a honeycomb, letting me know in a nasal voice: “Hello, Râșnov, you have a collect call, I’m putting you through, cabin 7, you may speak now…”

…2014, my mobile is ringing. “Hi, Șerban here, I’m putting together an album, called ‘Portrait of an Artist’…” Yes, for me Palatul Telefoanelor is the first authentically ‘City Progress’ image in Bucharest. After a week I find myself again, for the nth time, walking through Victoria Passage to meet {erban; across the street from the same building, this time restored and consolidated following a project by my former professor, engineer Alexandru Cișmigiu; I cross the street…

…and I enter the dream land of Mircea Eliade, Țara Blajinilor (the Land of the Kind); the light floods the upside-down image of a Calea Victoriei across the years – is this a dream? People, flying cars, skyscrapers, glow, joy, colors, light, and more light…

CITAT
