I don’t know which Bucharest to speak of… about the Bucharest of my childhood? The grey one, with grey blocks, grey parks, grey queues, grey people… about today’s Bucharest, with colored blocks suffocated by billboards, with clean parks, but increasingly fewer of them, without any queues, thank God, and…with people…
Whichever Bucharest I refer to, I know I have always perceived it as a city that is used and unloved.
I’m very fond of the Bucharest with a scent of the little Paris, with a perfume of acacia and linden trees, with mysterious streets with boyar houses, with Mântuleasa Street… I’m very fond of and hurt by the Bucharest of the old houses left to fall into ruin or helped to crumble… I perceive them as bleeding wounds on the face of the city… I’m hurt by the historical monuments of the Bucharest scorned by petty interests.
The lack of good taste of the whimsical groupings scratches my retina and I take as a personal insult the insolence of a 12-storey modern block built on a street with old houses of up to two stories.
It hurts me that there are too few theaters and spaces for culture… That the Literature Museum is disappearing, that many other museums are being left at the margins of history. I’m saddened by the roads forever being repaired… I’m hurt and saddened by many things in a city which I think deserves to be loved, respected and properly attended.
I’m not saying good things haven’t been done in Bucharest over the past 20 years, I’m simply saying that I think it deserves more attention, respect and care from every one of us.

Nu știu despre care București să vorbesc… despre Bucureștiul copilăriei mele? Cel gri, cu blocuri gri, parcuri gri, cozi gri, oameni gri… despre Bucureștiul de astăzi, cu blocuri colorate și sufocate de reclame, cu parcuri curate, dar din ce în ce mai puține, parcă… fără cozi, slavă Domnului, și… cu oameni…
La oricare București m-aș referi, știu că întotdeauna l-am perceput ca pe un oraș folosit și neiubit.
Mi-e foarte drag Bucureștiul cu parfum de mic Paris, cu mireasmă de salcâmi sau de tei, cu străzi misterioase, cu case boierești, cu strada Mântuleasa… Mi-e drag și mă doare Bucureștiul caselor vechi ce sunt lăsate pradă prăbușirii sau ajutate să se dărâme… Îmi par răni sângerânde pe fața orașului…
Mă dor monumentele istorice ale Bucureștiului batjocorit de interese meschine, îmi râcâie retina lipsa de bun-gust a alăturărilor fanteziste, iar impertinența unui bloc modern de douăsprezece etaje ridicat pe o stradă cu case vechi, de cel mult două nivele, o iau ca pe o insultă personală.
Mă doare că sunt mult prea puține teatre sau spații destinate culturii… Că Muzeul Literaturii dispare, că alte muzee sunt lăsate la marginea istoriei. Mă întristează carosabilul în veșnică reparație… Mă dor multe și mă întristează multe la acest oraș ce cred că merită să fie iubit, respectat și îngrijit cum se cuvine.
Nu spun că nu s-au făcut și lucruri bune în Bucureștiul ultimilor douăzeci de ani, spun doar că merită din partea fiecăruia dintre noi mai multă atenție, respect și prețuire.

I have invited 37 artists to take part in this project, and to choose a place in Bucharest to be photographed and to write a text about their relationship with the city. This idea would have remained only an idea without the support of ARCUB.
